Guest Speaker: Tyler Cash
My testimony is one of true redemption through God’s grace. Growing up was pretty rough. I never knew my father, moved around the country, and found myself in a constant cycle of trouble. I was frequently in and out of jail, drinking, doing drugs, and living a dark life of partying and indulging in anything to satisfy my flesh at the moment and numb the pain that was inside of me. Still in and out of trouble and often involved in violence, I ended up spending some time in prison. After prison, I tried to get my life together, but ended up getting heavily involved in selling drugs and became a pretty popular drug dealer. It was easy for me to become obsessed with living in the fast world where people seemed to want what I had. Still indulging in the party scene and at the core of my darkest moments, I felt deep inside like God was pursuing me. He pursued. And I fled. I ran away convincing myself that God could never love someone like me and definitely would never look past the things I had done.
On December 31st, 2013 while reading a passage in Psalms, I truly accepted that Jesus loved me enough to die for my sins and that my mistakes and transgressions were overcome by his grace and love for me. The anger and darkness that shackled me was replaced with freedom. Since then, God has put on my heart a passion for our community. I am now able to take my mistakes and stories and share them with people pointing them to the Savior that changed my life. I am currently the youth pastor at a church located in the inner city of Lynchburg, Virginia. I want to spread hope to people-adult and kids alike- and show them that God loves them and if He was able to save and change a wretch like me, the most broken of the broken, then there is hope for them too.
We keep the doors open on Friday nights for kids to walk into a safe environment as we show them Jesus’ love by worshipping together and just living life with them.
I also started a non-profit ministry called Hill City Crash that currently uses AAU traveling basketball as a vehicle to spread the gospel. We currently have 4 teams of about 60 kids raging between 6th-11th graders. God has given me a big vision for this ministry. We hope to continue to grow and eventually open up a boys and girls facility. I’ve learned through my journey that God is always in pursuit of us, even when we choose to run away. His grace is bigger than any of our sins and His love trumps our darkest days. It’s overwhelming, it’s free, and it’s what changed me.
